What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a holistic system of healing that incorporates a range of treatments and natural therapies, with the underlying belief that your body is able to fight infection and disease itself, given the right support. While conventional medicine is preoccupied with treating the symptoms of a disease or illness, naturopathy takes a more holistic approach to healthcare with a patients overall health a priority. Naturopaths are typically accredited by national associations, which ensure that they have undergone the required training, and comply with the highest standards of naturopathic practice.

Naturopathy believes that if one restores or maintains the equilibrium of the body, our immune system is better placed to defend itself against infection and disease. There is therefore no use of or reliance on medication as such – which would only serve to suppress the symptoms of an illness. A naturopath is more likely to recommend a programme of exercise, a change in diet or a natural treatment, than prescribe any drugs. Natural treatments and therapies are used to ensure that the body and mind are able to remain resilient, and recover promptly. When we do succumb to an illness and contract a fever this is viewed as the body dealing with the source of the problem. The fever is therefore not viewed as a negative event, rather as part of the body’s natural defence mechanism.

What are the principles of natural medicine?

The following principles make Naturopathic Medicine different from all other medical approaches:

√ The healing power of nature

Naturopathic and prophetic medicine recognises that all living systems have an innate ability to self-heal and my goal is to help your body initiate this process and or the remove of what is hindering this process from naturally taking place. As long as the body is given the correct circumstances, through Allah’s creation of your body’s innate intelligence, it will find a way to ‘normalise’ itself and to create homeostasis.

√ Treat the cause

In natural medicine we are trained to identify and remove the underlying causes of the disease; these causes can exist at a psychological, physical, mental, emotional & spiritual levels. They may involve some or all of these factors. It is my job to help remove or treat the cause of your disease rather than merely to suppress the symptom- because the symptom you are experiencing has a role – it is telling you that something is wrong in your body. Allah swt has created your body with innate intelligence to give off a physical sign to tell you that something is wrong so that you may proceed to doing what is necessary to work towards a solution, rather than ignoring or suppressing this symptom that serves a very holy mission; to let you know that something is not quite right.

√ First do no harm

In Islamic law, we know that if the disadvantage of something outweighs the advantage, that thing is not permissible for us. Therefore be rest assured that there is no chance with my method of treatment to further exacerbate your disease in any way.

√ Treat the whole person

After the industrial revolution man started looking at the human body as though it was a machine, as though a certain problem in a certain part was irrelevant to any other part. This is not correct. We must take into account the physical, mental, psychological and biochemical imbalances in the body to come up with a successful treatment plan.

√ Doctor as a teacher

The first verse that was revealed was ‘iqra’ read. It shows us the importance of education in all aspects. My job isn’t to take you there, my job is to show you the way. Think of me as your GPS, I can tell to you which way to turn however you are behind the steering wheel – not me. Taking 100% responsibility of your health means that you have 100% power over it, however if you blame certain people or circumstances, you are dis-empowering yourself for change.

√ Prevention is better than cure

In Islam a lot of the teachings and practices of the sahabah (friends of the Prophet) and the Prophet himself were around preventing disease – more so than curing. There was a certain amount of food eaten, in a certain way, at a certain time… You don’t want to live a life where you are constantly experiencing the absence of disease but also the lack of health… You want to feel 100% so that you can be your level best. You would rather do the right things on a daily basis and prevent cancer, rather than be diagnosed with it and then try to find a treatment for it.

√ Wellness

My role as your naturopath is to help you achieve wellness and stay there so that you may live your life at its fullest, being present in every single moment. This is important and therefore health is not a destination, it is a journey to the grave. For example there is not much benefit in eating 5 apples in one day then there is eating an apple a day for 5 days straight. RasulAllah says the best form of Islamic practice is the one that is consistent. This is why we are prescribed 5 daily prayers with no excuses, we don’t choose the time either, nor the number of prayers, they are set and necessary for both physical and spiritual wellness.

How does Naturopathy work?

Naturopathy works by understanding the “whole person” and identifying the causes of lack of wellness in the body. It then supports the body to naturally heal itself, without the use of surgery or drugs. Naturopathy calls on a wide range of tools and natural substances to help heal ailments, for example foods, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, digestive aids, herbal medicine and flower essences..

Who can benefit from Naturopathy?

Quite possibly you! Health is not the absence of a diagnosed disease, health is the ability to wake up in the morning looking forward to your day, when your physical, emotional and mental well-being is at synergy and harmony.
